Chinese Language Lessons

Our methodology has over 10 years experience and proven results in leading American Universities Chinese language Summer Programs such as Harvard and Princeton University.

Our teaching methodology is a synthesis of different techniques which have been developed after many years of research and practical application. Students are able to express themselves clearly in Chinese, according to their level, at the end of the course.

All our instructors have received rigorous professional training and are adept in using techniques and methods that help foreign students improve their Chinese skills in the shortest amount of time possible. Our instructors have extensive experience in teaching and effectively coach students in full and free expression and discussion.

The unique feature of our program is that students are provided with highly individualized instruction. The teacher to student ratio is currently 1:2.5. Each student is given individual attention to language skill areas that need improvement and their progress is closely monitored over their entire course of study. Such individualized instruction has consistently shown positive results over more than 10 years.

Our core language courses include listening comprehension, colloquial language classes, reading and writing. In all classes the principal classroom activity is “speech”, because we place special emphasis on spoken language instruction, especially in the earlier stages of a student's training. However, all texts from which students work are in Chinese characters.

We believe that real competence must be built on a solid foundation, that good pronunciation and tones are essential to full and easy oral communication, and that while most character learning and reading practice require self-study, the use of classroom time for practice and correction of oral skills is crucial.

:: Curriculum
Class assignments are made on the basis of each student's language background and performance on placement tests taken after arrival in Beijing.

From Monday to Thursday, students attend two hours of class in groups of maximum 5 people, two hours in groups of maximum 3 people and a one-on-one session with one of the teachers. Small groups allow intensive participation of students and one-on-one sessions are to work on individual problems e.g. tones, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc., and to review the lessons covered in their group classes. Classes start at 9:00 in the morning and end at different times in the afternoon. Every Friday morning students take an oral and written test.

We have learning materials in English, French and Spanish for beginners and lower intermediate levels. Materials for other levels are in English. All classes are conducted entirely in Chinese. All spoken language materials, as well as most reading materials, are also on MP3, and students are expected to make extensive use of these audio materials in preparation for their classes.

Note: PKU-CCI Summer Program is a very intensive language program. In addition to class hours, daily dictations, weekly quizzes, oral reports, and assigned homework and essays will keep most students occupied for the majority of their time in the program. Students will need at least one hour of self-study for each hour of class.

:: Language Pledge
Students must speak only Chinese (with exceptions for beginning level students). The Chinese-only pledge is considered valuable and critical in learning the language and developing fluency. Experience shows that students who make friends with local Chinese people and keep the use of their mother tongue to an absolute minimum show the greatest progress.

:: Chinese Lunch with Teachers
Another special feature of the program is the “Chinese lunch with Teachers”, offered at least once a week at lunchtime. These occasions give students an opportunity to practice Chinese with their teachers and to get to know them better. For other meals, students are encouraged to explore the eating options both on and off campus.

:: Language Partner
Every student will be introduced to a local Chinese person, so they can meet regularly to improve language skills and understand each other’s culture.
